Why KFI will remain the way it is!
When I wrote this piece, I didn’t realize I was being too harsh. But after reading it, I felt I was, thought of re writing but I have got other things to do now, so can’t help it. If our own people are always trying to pull us down, it hurts bad and results in an outburst. I am just giving you some facts as a response to the article published in Chitraloka about Home Talkies. Its sad how they are always ready to bring down someone and not equally enthu about promoting anything new.
All these days I had held on to a lot of info becoz a family never bitches about another family member. But today things have just gone too far!
Have you seen a single Kannada paper write about Home Talkies? Did anyone appreciate our efforts in making it? The online Kannada portal – Chitraloka, didn’t even mention anything about Home Talkies all these days. We were conveniently ignored by the media, but we didn’t care about it because we had people on our side. And our intention was to get people to watch a kannada movie and the producers to make their share of money. Period.
Home Talkies made many industry people Jealous. One and the only reason being everything on the site was clean and was following a corporate structure. There was no loop hole for any one to make any black money or to earn commissions. This made many people furious not just in India but also in other countries. They have decided to hit us back but haven’t realized that they just ruined the business for Kannada films and brought in loses for the producers.
Releasing a kannada movie online was initiated because that worked the best for people and the producers. When a Kannada movie has to be released theatrically in any other country, this is the procedure and the costs.
- Shipment of a Good print of the film
- Print cost – about 50k
- Shipment cost – Rs. 30,000/- (approximately)
- Theatre rent
No theatre overseas is interested in taking a kannada movie, they have to be begged and forced to give kannada movies atleast 3-4 shows in one city on a weekend. Finally the theatre agrees but they take away 50% of the ticket sales.
- Local Kannada Association
These guys take another 25% of the ticket sales in the name of promoting the show details to their mailing lists. A producer has to pay up for this because he has no other way of promoting a movie abroad.
- Inter state Shipment
Another 5 to 10% for moving the print from one state to another.
The producer was finally left with just 20%. This would amount to nothing, sometimes so less that the producer would not even attempt getting that money back. The print wouldn’t be shipped back either.
The audience would miss the movies in the theatre because they don’t get to choose the show time. They have to be free to watch a movie when it is being screened, so a movie released in theatres abroad would lose many audience. Travelling to a theatre was another issue that many of them complained about. These are the reasons why only very High budget movies could take the risk of releasing overseas. The rest of the movies were available only on torrents.
With Home Talkies we got the producer a platform to directly interact with the audience and not lose the money on these middle men. That is why they have decided to hit back. I won’t be surprised if it is these people who actually worked hard on pirating copies from the site and putting it up on Torrents to use this as a reason to discredit Home Talkies.
In their evil plans they didn’t realize that they were harming the producers whose movies was on the website.
I want to ask Chitraloka –
- If you are a kannada portal reporting news, how come there is nothing about Home Talkies on your portal in the last one month since we went live, however, you were very quick in carrying the information about torrents.
- Do you realize the harm you have done to the industry by publishing the article?
- Home Talkies gave direct income to the producers of Paramathma, Sidlingu, Lifeu Ishtene, Gubbachigallu and Manasaare. By publishing this article you have made people aware of torrents and ruined any business these producers could have made hence forth. How is your act helping the industry?
- How come none of the press releases from Home talkies talking about the new movement is published on Chitraloka, however a letter from a distributor in Australia who is losing his cut will make it to your site in no time.
- People world wide are supporting Project Lucia, how come not a word about it on your site or in any Kannada publications?
We contacted a Kannada association in America and told them to share the link of Home Talkies with their members so that they can watch kannada movies. The association replied by asking for money to do the same. We gave them the affiliate options and asked them to host the movies on their own sites and make money as well, they weren’t ready for this either, because the members would write to us and the association would lose their secret database! In this whole interaction we never saw any love for the language or any intention from the association to make the kannada people watch kannada movies.
As soon as we got to know Kannadatorrents.com was in to pirating kannada movies, we worked pretty hard and got that torrent shut. Has chitraloka done any such activity? And Kannada Torrent was taking money from the users to register, asking donations to pirate! Was any producer or the industry benefited by that?
Many times users avoid torrents because of all the malware that they come with. Students might have the time to search for a movie and navigate through the confusing torrents and find a download. But many prefer to just pay and watch a good copy without any hassles.
On the torrents, there are movies available whether you want it or don’t want it. Movies which are not on Home Talkies is also available on torrents. How does Chitraloka respond to that? We don’t have modalasal, Vishnuvardhana etc, yet you are showing the screenshot of those movies in torrents. Everyone is now watching Vishnuvardhana for free, if it was on home talkies at least a 1000 would have paid and watched.
We are currently working on shutting other torrent links, we are in touch with engineers in various countries to help us through this. Every time we shut one, another one will open up, and then we work on shutting them down. We signed up for this game when we started Home Talkies. But we never thought one of our own will back stab us.
The letter published on Chitraloka, written by Roopesh asks the industry to stop Legal Online screening! Of course Roopesh will ask for this. He is losing his distribution business. But was Roopesh able to deliver the movie in all the places Home Talkies was able to do? Could he have given the same returns to the producer as Home Talkies has given?
In the digital era, everything can be copied. We knew there was going to be attempts to pirate. The producers are also aware of that. If 1000 people watch it freely, there are a 100 people who want to pay up and watch guilt free. Home Talkies and the producers are reaching out to those 100 people. Without Home Talkies, those 100 would have had no option but to watch pirated copies. If 20,000 people as reported on Chitraloka are watching the movie for free, I guess it is time to celebrate because at least people are watching a kannada movie.
As we speak, there are already many parallel attempts being made to start similar sites like Home Talkies. I know competition exists, and yes people must compete but they must have better things to offer. I compete with Roopesh because I was able to give more money to producers. Another online portal might come which will give producers more money and charge audience less. They will win over us. That’s how the world is.
Sometimes I wonder if all this is worth the efforts! I could be in an Ad agency, I love being creative. But I guess I am now addicted to issues. I enjoy them.
In just last two weeks of Feb, two kannada movies on Home Talkies were viewed by people by making a payment in the following cities, was Roopesh or Chitraloka able to take Kannada movies in all these places in these many years?
(This data is automated every time there is a payment, we don’t manually compile it.)
